Assim definimos <strong>elemento<\/strong> como uma subst\u00e2ncia que n\u00e3o pode ser <em>quimicamente separada em outros elementos<\/em> e n\u00e3o pode ser produzida <em>combinando dois ou mais elementos<\/em>; <strong>fen\u00f4meno<\/strong>, qualquer altera\u00e7\u00e3o na <em>composi\u00e7\u00e3o de uma subst\u00e2ncia<\/em>; e, por <strong>afinidade<\/strong>, entende-se a <em>energia libertada quando um \u00e1tomo em estado gasoso recebe um el\u00e9tron<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mas o que vem a ser \u201c\u00e1tomo\u201d, \u201cmat\u00e9ria\u201d e \u201cespa\u00e7o\u201d? Entende-se por <strong>\u00e1tomo<\/strong> a <em>menor unidade de mat\u00e9ria poss\u00edvel<\/em>; por <strong>mat\u00e9ria<\/strong>, tudo o que <em>possui massa e ocupa espa\u00e7o<\/em>; por <strong>massa<\/strong> a quantidade de <em>mat\u00e9ria em um objeto<\/em>; por <strong>espa\u00e7o<\/strong>, o <em>intervalo entre dois pontos<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Estudar qu\u00edmica \u00e9 compreender cada um de seus componentes, cada part\u00edcula individual, e \u00e9 essencial definir cada uma de suas partes de forma clara e precisa. Um \u00e1tomo \u00e9 composto por pr\u00f3tons, el\u00e9trons e n\u00eautrons. Um <strong>pr\u00f3ton<\/strong> \u00e9 uma <em>part\u00edcula de carga el\u00e9trica positiva<\/em>. Um <strong>n\u00eautron<\/strong> \u00e9 uma <em>part\u00edcula neutra<\/em>, ou seja, que n\u00e3o tem carga el\u00e9trica. Um <strong>el\u00e9tron<\/strong> \u00e9 uma <em>part\u00edcula de carga negativa<\/em> e de massa muito pequena. Cada elemento \u00e9 associado a um <strong>s\u00edmbolo qu\u00edmico<\/strong>, composto por uma ou duas letras, sendo a primeira sempre mai\u00fascula e, a segunda, min\u00fascula. Acima do s\u00edmbolo qu\u00edmico est\u00e1 o <strong>n\u00famero at\u00f4mico<\/strong> (o n\u00famero de pr\u00f3tons que um \u00e1tomo cont\u00eam). Abaixo do s\u00edmbolo est\u00e1 o nome do elemento. Ela descobriu v\u00e1rios elementos, como o Pol\u00f4nio; e revelou que o T\u00f3rio era radioativo.
